Any real anime fan knows the name of Hayao Miyazaki from genius creations like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke or the more recent Kaze Tachinu (The wind rises). If you are a fan of this man’s creations, then you may have already heard about his plan of retiring.

Mr. Hayao Miyazaki has confirmed the rumors about his retirement in a NicoNico streamed press conference, mentioning that even though he said many times he would retire, this time he has really made his choice of leaving behind his creative career.

He also mentioned that his ideas for anime were very numerous and that he is disappointed that he did not have the time to bring them to reality. Mr. Hayao blames his retirement on his eyesight getting worse. He says that every day, he left his office earlier and earlier, sign that his age was taking a toll on his body.

Despite being in a constant fight with his age, he stated that said that as long as he is still able to drive, he will still go to the studio every day. He uses the retirement to destroy the possibility of making any official promises to the public, so that he will be able to work at his own pace, without disappointing anyone.

He mentioned that he won’t be making any other feature films anymore, because that would take him up to six or seven years. In his opinion, saying he will make another movie of this kind, would be like an old man promising to do something foolish.

This man is really impressive! He doesn’t run away from the hands of time, but rather, he embraces them, and decides to continue displaying his love for anime to the world in his own pace. He even said that he plans to be working for ten more years, even though he knows that there is a possibility for him to not be able to reach his goal, as he is already 72 years old.

I really hope with all my might that this legend will live as much as he wants to, because he deserves it. His love for anime and anime fans is really one of the purest I have ever seen or read about. I say we should all root for Mister Hayao         Miyazaki, wish him a beautiful well-deserved retirement and thank him sincerely for the beautiful anime creations he brought to the world.
