One of Hayao Miyazaki’s best known anime creation is none other than Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime). This Japanese film was created in 1997 and it was first released on July 12 of the same year.

For those of you who don’t know what it’s all about, this anime movie is a period drama (also known as a jidaigeki) set in late Muromachi period of Japan. The story tells of a conflict between the supernatural guardians of a forest and the humans that consume its resources. You may think that “Mononoke” is a name, but you should know that it actually means “monster” or “spirit”. The forest was very beautifully drawn and while watching it you will get a feeling of nature’s power over the world. But you don’t have to take my word for it, for you now have the opportunity to visit that forest in real life!

Yup… the Japanese have done it again. A famous Japanese island called Yakushima is known for its breathtaking beauty and for its trees that are thousands of years old. Not only the Princess Mononoke fans are happy, but the entire world will be happy as well. This new touristic point will gather thousands of people together thanks to its beauty. If I were to philosophize a little, I would say that I am finally happy that people are drawn together by beauty instead of money, hatred and other well-known characteristics of the little old human.

But let’s be fair, everybody knows that it is quite impossible for humanity to build a forest because they saw a great anime. The truth is that Hayao Miyazaki was inspired by the Yakushima
Island, thus being able to create such amazing sights. Witness the true beauty of nature by seeing the anime, and feel it first-hand by going to Yakushima Island. Safe travels!

Wow. I have a photo of that exact same spot (last pic) that I took a few years ago. Thought maybe it had been ‘stolen’ but then realised that mine was slightly out of focus and less well framed. 🙂

Amazing place. I would recommend leaving aside about 3-5 nights there as the rain can come down and block some of the treks. If you only have one night on the island you may miss out on a lot due to high dangerous rivers.
